Levelling up

My names Joe, Joe Jackson. I arrived in Dublin Ireland February 2017 from a little city called Toronto, Ontario. Within my first month abroad I made some good friends at my hostel, found a great job in the city centre, joined a soccer team, and drank like a king in Galway. It was litty. Since then I have found living here to be something that you have to embrace and go saying "why not?". Yes there are a few bumps and struggles but that's life. All in all give living abroad a chance.

More than I thought it would be

From the very beginning USIT Work in Ireland was very helpful and answered my questions and reassured my uncertainties going without pressuring me into actually doing the program. There were a few moments of panic throughout the application process, but they went above and beyond in assisting me through the process and putting me in with any person I would need to talk to at that stage. Once you arrive, they are very helpful in providing resources for finding a job and accommodation. I highly recommend this program as they have eased any worries I had before arriving and during my stay.

Travel experience

I liked almost everything for the travel and did not like the expenses which I had to pay because I felt it was expensive. However it was one kind of great adventure when someone travels and face money related problem.

Don't be afraid to travel alone!

At first, I was quite hesitant traveling alone with no friends, family, or support system. I’m the type to feel anxious with any substantial change in my life. Though this was the case, the Work in Ireland team made me feel comfortable with stepping out of my comfort zone and taking on the journey to Dublin. Although I came alone, my orientation session involved other Work in Ireland participants in the same boat as me. Please consider these next few sentences if you’re still feeling reluctant with relocating. If you’re worried the stress of finding a job, a place, and setting up a bank account in a foreign country —don’t be. The Work in Ireland team made this entire process not only easy, but quick. Colleen and Rebecca sent me daily job listings and apartment listings via email right after my day at orientation. In all honesty, moving to a new country may be huge, but once you go through with it—it will be one of the best life decisions you’ll make.

Life changing experience

Five years ago I decided to leave everything behind – family, friends, job and home – to go on a life changing experience filled with highs and lows. The experience along with the support of USIT allowed me to not only reflect on who I was, but allowed me to know myself in a way like no other. Fast forward to today and after a year in Ireland and two years in London I continue to make new friends and memories that allow me to grow and evolve. I hope to take it all in while I live in a country that captured my heart so many years ago. I want to help others have the same experience and tell those wondering if they should do it that they will make connections with a country, people and themselves in a way that will change their life forever.
