THE BEST DECISION I MADE

Studying abroad through USAC to San Sebastian was by far my best choice I made in college. I had the BEST homestay mom, she made my experience so special by helping me feel like I had family around me. It was difficult to be in a new country I didnt speak the language and it was difficult to jump into Spanish classes, but the challenge was key to me discovering my limits and how much I am capable of!

Summer study abroad

This was the best summer ever! San Sebastián is such a beautiful city, I would highly recommend visiting. The people in the program all became friends so quickly and we did everything together. The teachers were great mentors. I took a surfing class (take!!!) and a poetry class in Spanish.

The Basque country

Studying in abroad in the Basque country was a big step for me, being right out of my Freshman year in college. The USAC program supported me by preparing me, answering all of my emails and letting me drop in to ask questions and use their phone. My host family was fantastic and took excellent care of me with delicious local meals, practicing my Spanish with me, hosting parties for my study abroad friends and weekend family excursions. The location cannot be beat: walk to class along the beaches, hike in the hills by your home and get from one side of town to the other in 30 minutes? It is a very culturally rich area perfect for the ideal experience that USAC creates!

Experience of a lifetime

I hope that my trip abroad to study in San Sebastian won't be the highlight of my life, for obvious reasons, however I honestly won't be surprised if it was. Before I left, I was actually extremely nervous because of how obnoxiously introverted I used to be. But, I decided to just go for it anyway and that was absolutely the best decision I have made so far in my life. I had such an amazing time and was able to learn tremendous amounts myself and discovered how much more capable I am than I originally thought.

Exploring the Basque Country

Studying abroad in San Sebastian Spain was one of the greatest experiences of my life. USAC really was a great program to study through. They were helpful, nice, and if you ever needed anything, they were always there for you. San Sebastian is one of if not the most beautiful place that I have had the pleasure of calling home. If I could go back tomorrow, I would.

Donosita-San Sebastian

The USAC San Sebastian program offers helpful and insightful classes, teaching and other internships, conversation partners to practice Spanish or Basque, and great opportunities to explore the Basque Country and other areas of Spain. Studying abroad was the greatest experience of my life so far, and I met friends and fell in love with a new culture that I know will always be a part of my life. Now that I'm home, I'm a completely different person for the better, and everyday I'm working towards a way to get back to Spain! USAC opened my eyes to a completely new life that I couldn't imagine living without, you will, without a doubt, have an amazing experience when you go abroad with USAC.

Eye Opening Immersion

Studying abroad in San Sebastian Spain was one of the best decisions I have made. USAC helped set me up with an amazing family and classes geared toward my personality and language level. San Sebastian truly became my home as I was able to not just learn another culture but embody it and live it as my own. The host family that I was placed in took me in as their own and helped me adjust and live the like a local as well as practice my Spanish. USAC really took my interests and personality to heart when placing me with an appropriate family whom I still communicate with today. The USAC staff overseas were also wonderful with working with the student's needs and concerns. They helped set me up with a paid internship teaching English in a local school, organized amazing field trips to places that would be difficult to get to on our own, and gave us loads of information and support within our program location. I was able to have that support and guidance when I needed it but was also free to grow as an individual without feeling restrained or held back. Studying abroad gave me confidence, insight, compassion, and experience which I have taken back home and implemented into my everyday life. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to live in another culture which ultimately helps you learn your own culture and your place within it.

Great support for a semester abroad

The USAC staff was always so helpful and welcoming. I was in their office a lot. The classes were pretty easy and I gained a lot from great topics like History of Rock and Roll, European Art, and of course, the Spanish classes I took. If I were to study abroad again it would definitely be with USAC!

San Sebastian was paradise, and sometimes I wonder if it was all a dream!

I grew up in a beautiful part of California that many people vacation. I probably took it for granted, growing up amongst gorgeous beaches and palm trees. Many say the same San Sebastian, but my hometown doesn't even compare. San Sebastian, Spain is truly heaven, and my study abroad experience was like living in a dream. I lived only a few blocks from the beach at the top "penthouse" apartment, and somehow paid the same amount in rent as I did back in my college town. Food was incredible (did you know San Sebastian holds the highest number of Michelin stars per square meter), residents were friendly, and the city is easily navigable. I always felt safe, whether it was walking through town early in the morning, or even very late at night. School was enjoyable and my profesora, Mary, was a joy. She made going to class during the siesta time (when everyone was supposed to be napping) completely worth it. I learned Spanish and gained confidence quickly, knowing I had to communicate to learn my way around! Fall was also the best time to go. We still caught the tail end of summer, enjoyed balmy weather during September, and witnessed the changing of the seasons as we approached the holidays. The lightning and thunderstorms were exciting, and it felt like a real autumn. Traveling on weekends was fairly easy, with access to buses and cheap flights out of nearby airports. The scheduled trips with USAC were once-in-a-lifetime - how many people can say they spent a day at a Basque farm in the countryside or in an old witch caves in the Pyrenees? By December, I felt like a local in some of the coffee shops and bars. I knew which bridges to cross to get to the other side of town, I knew which buses were the fastest, and I knew when the great deals on pintxos (tapas) and sangria drinks were (hint: Thursday night). San Sebastian will forever be another home to me. If you want to be immersed in Spanish and Basque culture, eat award-winning food, see the most beautiful coastline and rolling hills, and meet some of the kindest, most generous people, go to San Sebastian. The Basque Country does not disappoint.

Being in the Basque Country

Living is Spain was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Many people can say that their trip abroad, but I really do believe it to be true. I had the chance to really experience the Basque Country and try to integrate with an unfamiliar culture. The people were welcoming and excited to tell you their history and culture. The food was awesome, though you might miss spicy food, they more then make up for it with delicious pinxtos (Basque finger foods). The teachers were always willing to help and made it a goal to get you talking and excited the language. I did feel that I didn't meet as many locals as I could have, but I stayed with a host family so I had the chance to speak with them to practice my Spanish. The people were awesome and I would have loved to live there because of the people alone, but the beautiful beaches and great city helped too!

Cultural Immersion and Awareness

This experience really opened my eyes to the differences that exist culturally between that in the United States and virtually anywhere else. From the experience I have grown more tolerant and understanding as it pertains to interacting with people from different countries, or even just different states. My study abroad experience also helped in shaping me into a more flexible and patient individual, as things often didn't go exactly as planned in regards to traveling and getting around just within San Sebastian. I've learned that the best way to really learn something new is to immerse myself in the culture of whatever I am studying, to interact with those who live or work within this area of study, and to practice what I am learning on a daily basis. Though only a four month study program, this time abroad impacted me in ways that have helped shape my future as well as my individual career plans.
