Still my best experience abroad

I was a part of the inaugural program in Florianopolis in Spring 2013. Despite the program being brand new, it was an exceptional experience. The USAC team was awesome, the university (UFSC) was high-quality, and the city of Floripa is simply one of the greatest cities on the planet.

Since then, I've been to Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, and Mexico - but Florianopolis and Brazil still hold top the list of my experiences abroad.

Florianópolis, Brazil - intro to Brazil and Latin America

I really do believe that each person makes their study abroad experience what it is, but I recommend choosing Florianópolis, Brazil because of its many options of activities, places to go, things to learn, and its introduction to Brazil and the rest of Latin America. I stayed in a homestay while in Florianópolis (which I recommend!), which afforded me the constant opportunity to not only practice my Portuguese skills, but build relationships with my host family. In my experience, having a host family helped me to feel more comfortable, taken care of, welcome, safe, and also confident in being able to live and exist in a new place. I also was very lucky that close to my host family were a group of apartments which housed both local Brazilians and people from my program. Having proximity to these folks also helped me to build connections with people within my program and with people who have lived and spent a lot of time on the island. For me, building all these relationships meant going to new places, trying new activities, and learning new things - Brazil, the local Floripa culture, Latin American history, and more personal things - like how to be vulnerable, how to sit and listen, how to be patient, how to ask for help and let others help you, how to achieve the things you need, among others. These are all things that I am sure other study abroad locations offer to students, but I feel that Florianópolis, a relatively small and growing city, with access to many beaches, a lively and active university campus, and just a flight or bus away from other Brazilian cities, has a nice stepping-stone feel to jump into a new place and a new period of one's life.

Experience of a lifetime - summer sessions 2013

Where to begin! I studied abroad at UFSC during the summer of 2013 and I had an extremely positive experience.

From my host family/housing setup and Floripa's magestic scenery (the beaches are spectacular!), to the engaging classwork and down-to-earth professors, this program instilled some very fond memories that have had a marked impact on me. During my time at UFSC, the in-country USAC staff (Renato, John, Aline, etc.) were really helpful. They were more than prepared to deal with any questions, concerns, and predicaments that arose during the two summer sessions that I completed. Because of the relatively small class sizes, the professors delivered lessons that captivated the involved students.

Having said all of this, I cannot recommend this program enough! I fell in love with Brazil by way of my time at UFSC via USAC— so much so that, two years later, I returned to the country for a stint and I am already hoping to go back again.

Uma expedição necessária para todos. ( A necessary expedition for everyone)

My experience in Florianopolis was one of the all time greatest in my lifetime. I would highly recommend it for anyone that is seeking adventure, culture experiences and change. Universities should make a semester abroad an absolute mandatory. This was not my first time being in Brazil, however it was my first time in that particular area and one that I will never forget. The program was very informative prior to arriving in Floripa (Florianopolis for short), they made sure the students (and parents) had everything together in terms of classes, transportation, living situations, extracurricular activities and etc. The one challenge that I urge people to start early is the visa process, because without it; you cannot go. The classes were extremely well taught and productive, the offer plenty of options to choose from. Ranging from Brazilian art to studying the South American economies and Portuguese of course. On the weekends they offer trips, some of them being for a day and an overnight one (that may have changed, since I was there 4-5 yrs ago). The area itself is absolutely gorgeous, it's a mixture of mountains and beaches with a splash of rainforest. The Students on campus and the locals from the area are incredibly nice and helpful. People say that Brazil is very dangerous, but so are a lot of places in the US. So for all those helicopter/nervous-nelly parents; Florianopolis is incredibly safe! It will be okay! Brazil is also known for its samba dancing, and they love to dance. So for all the socialites seeking relaxation after studying all week, Brazil is the best place to go. In terms of monetary challenges, Brazil is much cheaper in most categories. Most importantly, the food is very very delicious in my opinion... Overview: You learn so much, you have a ton of fun and you will have experiences and friends you will have forever. So what do you have to lose?

Great experience

My time spent abroad was unforgettable. If I were to redo my study abroad trip I would not have it any other way. Pre-departure, the USAC staff did an excellent job of helping the students through the visa process and arrival in Lyon step by step. Upon arrival, a representative met me in my new housing building and assisted me to my room and helped with getting everything set up for a comfortable stay. One thing that I really liked the program was that the advisers in Lyon were extremely personal. There were a plethora of students involved on the trip and I felt that each adviser really took the time to get to know every one of the students involved on a personal level. In addition to their great personal approach to the experience, the program advisers planned out two excellent day trips during the study abroad to great destinations nearby; included in the program fee! The other thing that is so great this program is the academic/ social life balance. While there are a fair amount of classes and class work, the amount of time is happily balanced with social life. As a result of the scheduling put together by the advisers and corresponding university, I was able to enjoy my time in the beautiful city of Lyon and go travelling on weekends and during fall break with my friends. They do an excellent job of organizing housing and you will meet many friends for life along the process of this great experience. I highly recommend the USAC Lyon study abroad experience to anyone who has an interest in French culture, European travelling, and academic language improvement.
