Pura Vida - Experience Costa Rica

"Pura Vida" is a phrase that Costa Rica has been familiar with for decades. Whether you are located in the heart the city, San Jose or located in the central pacific of Manuel Antonio, this expression will become familiar to all visitors. "Pura Vida" is english for "pure life” or “simple life" which is not only expressed everyday but is transmitted through the way the communities live.

Majority of volunteers take part in this experience to grasp a feeling of accomplishment and value, not only did I fulfill my hopes of achieving that, this experience provided me with a new outlook on life. I was able to connect with so many locals, teachers and children within the two weeks I taught. As a volunteered teacher, you are able to connect with children within the classroom and outside of the classroom. You are able to learn the everyday struggles that the people of Costa Rica experience, things that you as a volunteer would never think is a problem. On the contrary to the "struggles" some experience, you gain a appreciation for your life as well as you learn from who you met on your travels how sincerely grateful they are to just be placed on this earth. That alone gives volunteers a reminder that life is too short and you need to seize any opportunity you get to help those who cannot help themselves.

In terms of the trip, you will be placed within a school for 3 hours Monday to Friday, weekends off. IVHQ provides you with a local family, who are safe, friendly and appreciative that you are doing good within their community. You will be working through Maximo Nivel, who works tirelessly to make sure your experience exceeds its potential. On the weekend, you are free to roam Costa Rica and see what this beautiful country offers. Personally, the best experiences as a volunteer was when I just said yes, hopped on a bus and began discovering.

If you are considering volunteering, all I can say is say yes. Start to saying yes to life in general, I would recommend Costa Rica to anyone because the teaching program offers each volunteer to immerse yourself into the culture, enhance your language skills and help those in need.

Teaching English in Vuelo de Aguila

This was far and away the best experience of my entire life. Nothing will ever compare to this. The staff are all angels and do everything in their power to ensure a good experience for the volunteers. Travelling on the weekends is incredibly fun and the project itself is fulfilling and enjoyable.

My once in a life time experience

Great experience but initially a cultural shock. The Costa Rican people is a joy to know once you get past cultural and language barriers. The scenery is very like my home State of Hawaii, USA so is the climate.
My adult teaching program is great as I really think I am making a slight difference to the residents lives at the township. Overall my first week has been a great experience and for the remainder of my program of 5 weeks I am looking forward to more rewarding experinces.

Teaching English in Costa Rica

My experience in Costa Rica was amazing. The other volunteers that I met all had different stories and came from different backgrounds and everyone was extremely friendly. Maximo Nivel was a great meet up spot for volunteers and very central. My host family was great and it made a huge difference having a host mom who took so much care in cooking us amazing meals and asking us our days. She gave us advice before we would travel different places and was always up for an afternoon chat in her kitchen. She made sure we were all comfortable in her home and I loved staying there and hope to be able to go back one day. Teaching english at my location was also a great experience. I learned a lot the schools in Costa Rica and enjoyed spending time with the kids every day. The hardest part was saying goodbye! Over all I truly enjoyed my time in Costa Rica and hope to go back some day.
