AuPair China

I've been an AuPair with LoPair for almost 9 month (Beijing/Hangzhou) now. My time had it's up and downs. You make a lot of new friends that will help you through the hard times and be with you in the good times. The families you get are a bit of a toss up: you can be incredible lucky or get a absolute horrible one. Mine were okay and I count my lucky stars for that. Don't get me wrong they weren't perfect either. for my first 6 month I worked way too many hours and didn't really have any of my off days. My second one was better but I had to remind them constantly that I had off time or that my pocket money was due. The intercultural communication was challenging but you get used to it after a while and find ways to cope with it. By now I'm a pro at haggling ;)

Au pair in Shanghai

Absolutely loved the city and the family I stayed with! I was made at home straight away, the host parents always joked that I was like the oldest daughter. The program has made me develop as a person, and I am going to take away memories I will treasure for life! :)

Amazing experience

I’m glad that I decided to come to China! It’s one of the best experience I had so far. I met international friends, learned a new language and get memories for a lifetime! The Chinese family I lived with was nice and I had a lot of free time to explore Beijing. I also went to Shanghai, Hangzhou, in the countryside and spend 3 weeks in Sanya with my hostfamily. The agency and my local coordinator have been reliable the whole time. I had a great time in class twice a week with my friends and the teachers at Mandarin house were really nice.

Thanks to my host-family

I want to start off by saying that I was extremely lucky with my host-family. They have always been very welcoming and understanding, and fortunately we had very few misunderstandings. I have had a great 6 months in Shanghai, and I definitely recommend the city.

However, I want to adress a few things that isn't that great this company. First of all, NEVER offer to pay for something and then let them pay you back. You will not get that same amount back. Secondly, be aware that the cultural programs are very rare and at odd times; I haven't even made it to one; so If you don't get along with those you come with, you may end up feeling very isolated and alone. Also, if your intention is to learn Chinese as a beginner, this is not the way, as the language courses are very rare and not that good. Last and most important: safety and communication. This didn't happen to me personally, but I heard of three girls visiting a different city, and ended up being drugged and robbed, without any possibility to return to their host-families. They reached out to the company for help, and their response was basically "This is your fault for going to a bar, and you are putting this whole company to shame". Their local coordinator had also since then, been ignoring them at all costs. I mean?
In general, they seem to just care the satisfaction of the paying host-parents, not us.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of the company, I've had a good experience and I believe that you can too, just be very careful and ask the right questions, when it comes to picking a host-family.

Au pair Hangzhou

After 6 month of being an Aupair in China I can say that I enjoyed my time here I enjoyed exploring China and experiencing the Chinese culture.
My family was really nice and I‘ll miss this kids.
But still being an Aupair in China is different from other countries. What depends on your family but also on your mind setting and your durability.

Excellent experience

The experience has been awesome. My family and I really connected since the beginning. I'm going to miss them a lot when I go back to Spain because they are like my family now; they are my one and only Chinese family hahaha
My host family helped with everything as much as they can because sometimes it was really hard to lead with only Chinese the all day when I went outside of my house, but that made my Chinese improved a lot in these few months.

Great 6 month

I had a great time with my family. In these 6 mounth I was with my family, I expierienced a lot of nice and new things. At first I needed a bit time to adjust to the conditions but they helped me with everything they could.
The Mndarin classes were always fun and helped me a lot. Our teacher was pation with us and always tried to explain things so we could understand them.
I met a lot of new friends, with whom I will stay in even after we will leave China. We so much fun meeting up and they were always the first people I could speak with, when I had problems.

Great au pair company

LoPair is the best au pair company in Hangzhou from what I can tell. I've talked with many au pairs. LoPair is the most responsive to the needs of foreigners. Being an au pair in China is difficult, but LoPair will make it as easy as possible.

Aupair in Beijing

I came to China in order to improve my Chinese skills. Beijing is a very good city for foreign students because here the accent is very close to putonghua.
I had a great experience with my host family, too! I became a part of the family and was treated as the big sister of my host brother, what I'm very thankful for.
The only bad thing I can tell Beijing is the pollution. I was told that this winter was one of the best during the last few years. Still, I think one should be aware of this issue. I wish I was told more it before my arrival.

Being an au pair in China is totally different than everything I've done and I've know before. It was a challenge but I don't regret anything and I'm so grateful for all the experiences I made. After all, I can say that I had a great time and met amazing people.

Au Pair

Although it was a rocky first 4 months, I was finally able to find an amazing family! It all worked out in the end. But lo pair did a good job helping me find a great family. They were always available to discuss any issues with me and the family.

China 2017/18

The pocket money is definitely too less. To pay for the transportation and food if you're outside, for travelling, clothes, some personal stuff, the money is not enough for it.

Great experience!

I stayed 6 month in Ningbo with a really great host family! They helped me a lot to get used to the Chinese culture like the food or the language. Also my host child, 8 years old, really liked to learn english with me. I found a another family, my Chinese family, and I'm already looking forward to visit them again. This was the best part of my China experience: My Chinese family with all their help and support.
The culture classes from Lopair were always interesting and it was fun to experince the different culture together with other AuPairs. I had a great local coordinator who helped me with problems thst I had over the months.
To come to China as an AuPair is a very interesting thing you can do in your life, I think it will change you, but in a positive way! :)

My experience in China is being one of the greatest adventure in my life. The lo pair agency helped me out in any “difficult” situation offering me full support on all fronts when needed and helping me out to understand more the Chinese culture and helping me developing my love for it. Thanks to them, i expanded my horizons and i’ll Definitely try to go back to China, a place that now, I personally love.

My review

I stayed in Ningbo for 4 months. I had a great overall experience. My family was absolutely wonderful. I had to teach my host kids (7y old) French and English. I had a very good relationship to the kids as well as to any other member of the family. Most family members didn't speak English, but we were still able to get along with each other well. My family let me experience Chinese culture very deeply and was always interested in explaining me things their culture and Chinese history.

Best experience of my Life

I don't know how to put in words how amazing my host family is. They've given me so much love and support since day 1 and still continue to do everyday. I appreciate the fact that they don't hover and give me my space. They're open minded and full of life.? I am so grateful for them and thank them for entrusting me with their little one. Everyday is an adventure with Lena. Lena has captured my heart completely, that little girl makes a difference by simply smiling. She's fierce and full of humor. Her personality is fun and outgoing, and its contiguous. She's so free spirited and intelligent. She's so good and kind hearted. It breaks my heart knowing I'll be leaving soon. I only wish I had more time with my host family. They have made every hardship in China worth it.

Lucky to meet my family

It's been almost 6 months since I met my host family for the first time. Under this 6 month our relationship have become better and better and now when it's almost time for me to leave, I have a relationship with this three people that I never thought I would have. I left my comfort zone, I started a new life, in a new country with a family I didn't even knew then. And I never been so afraid. Now I often think how luckily I was to end up in this family. They are always there for me. Make me laugh, support me when I'm sad, stand by my side when I'm scared. They give me advise and help me even when I don't ask for it. They are not only "just a host family" that gives me food and a room to stay in. They are my best friends that gave me a home and days filled with warmth and love. We talk a lot and we do things together and I think that is one of the main things if you want to have a good relationship with your host family. We don't even have to talk special stuff, I tell them almost everything even if it's important or not. We make jokes and teas each other which leads to a lot of laugther.

You get what you give and that also means that you have to help your host family and make them a favor sometimes. Show that you care your host kid and that will soon or later also turn in to trust, both from the parents and the kid. Just be yourself and always be kind, then it will turn out good.

Just by going to China I've got the little sister I always wanted and I will be forever grateful that I met my wonderful family!

Au Pair experience in Shanghai

I'm very very happy here. The kids are perfect! They've been giving me hugs, we go for walks, they tell me they like me, they want me to read to them, they want to learn and speak English. The family is lovely. So there's a change in behaviour and attitude which is exactly what I needed. 50% is the Aupair 50% is the kids. And the kids are perfect! I've got all the resources and the kids have the attitude and enthusiasm.

My life in China

I can't believe it's over! My life in China certainly had its fair shares of ups and downs. It was hot (which was not always a good thing, but now I'm back in cold Britain, I'm starting to miss the feel of the sun on my skin) and it was humid (think big hair always needing to be tied up, and lots of lots rain - but at least it was warm!). The food was amazing. I had an amazing diet there, even losing weight, and now I'm back to cooking meals for myself, I can't quite master the techniques and taste of the lovely ayi's cooking. The aubergines, the pumpkins, the tofu and bean sprouts, the beef and chicken (but not chicken feet!), the eggs and congee were all delicious and scrumptious. The only thing I hated and am glad to be away from is durian (seriously don't try durian pizza) - it is very smelly and you can never seem to get away from it when you're in supermarkets. The tea also deserves a special mention. I had a lot of it, in a lot of different varieties such as oolong, green, black, chrysanthemum and rice. The culture itself in China is rich and beautiful. My time there taught me a lot family structures and hard work, and made me more appreciative of my extended family. I enjoyed many aspects of the life there, and I really enjoyed the marketing shopping (and the bargaining) as well as the travelling (-especially at the end of my trip, where I celebrated my birthday in Hong Kong and had an amazing time with some of my friends... Seriously check out Hong Kong by yourself if you can, it is really cool). I quite liked learning Mandarin but it is hard and I can't say I know much of it. Regardless, my teachers were nice and I'm grateful the opportunity to take classes there as even learning some basic phrases really helped me get around and connect with people. The teaching was intense and challenging. You really have to be versatile and creative. I stayed with two families (6 weeks each)- for the first one I taught my five year old lots of songs and we sang and played a lot. He had a fantastic memory and a good set of lungs which worked well for when we burst into a dance and song. For the second family, my personal conditions and environment was much better but in a way it was more challenging as the family had a higher set of expectations (that being said, despite all the hard work, I preferred my second half of the programme than the first half). I was looking after two boys then, and I taught them a range of subjects from geography and geology (e.g. glaciation) to history (like world war two or the roman empire) to woodwork, religion, engineering types, politics, and even musical terms in Italian (yes, you read that right! I'm not terribly proficient in Italian but my older brother needed to learn them so I figured out a way to teach him them). I like spending time with the brothers - we did a lot of chasing, and playing (from sword fights to jungle gyms), I rediscovered my love for Harry Potter and Doctor Who (with David Tennant!) with them, and we learnt a lot from each other, outside all the studies - my older brother taught me some calligraphy and I taught him how to cook steak. My trip here wasn't always pleasant but the kids, despite some of their tantrums, were pretty cool. I did not have a good local coordinator in the first half of my trip here, which made some things very difficult for me as she ebbed away at my self esteem and my sense of self. She was a powerfully negative force on me, but the company replaced her and went to great lengths to support me in this time. I overall, had a lot of ups and downs but I had some great friends, and wonderful memories there. Lo pair was supportive and were very caring and helpful, and the Chinese culture was amazing.

A summer full of new experiences.

Overall I have enjoyed my summer as an Au Pair in China. There were of course a few difficulties especially regarding my health but it did not spoil anything for me. My host family was great to live with despite some of our differences and I could not have met kinder people here. It's a truly worthwhile opportunity and I would urge anyone who loves children and wants to learn a new culture to go for it. I could not be more glad that I took this opportunity when it came to me.
