WOW!!! This will change your life!!

This was an amazing experience and I would recommend it to anyone looking for any volunteer project, cultural experience or just an adventure. I looked into other free volunteer programs but IVHQ was the only that one I found that required a criminal background check on all their volunteers. I was a female traveling with another female and this provided a feeling of security within my volunteer group. We where in Guatemala for a holiday experience so not only were we able to participate in a few different volunteer opportunities but we were also able to experience New Years Guatemalan style.

Holiday Experience

As an adult with a full time job it’s not easy to take a weeks’ vacation let alone more. This is why I became so interested in the Holiday Experience from International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ). It’s a one week program during the holidays that allows volunteers to experience multiple placements during their trip. My placement was in Antiqua, Guatemala for one week during Christmas. I was able to work at three different placements and felt like what I did truly mattered. Did I change the world…no. Did I make a positive impact no matter when it came to the people I interacted with as well as within myself …yes! That’s why I loved this program so much. I can only afford to have a week off from work and I really wanted to volunteer and this program made it possible. I was able to immerse myself fully into the culture by learning Spanish from just normal communication…or learning how to salsa through Maximo Nivel (the organization in Antigua). Some would say one week is not enough but in my experience, I worked very hard to stay out of my room and tried my best to live as a local would. This is a symbiotic experience where you leave something for those you interact with but you also leave with something. Whether that be a sense of fulfillment for helping your fellow person or a new realization yourself. Don’t go back and forth like I did in the decision to go because once I landed; I knew I’d made the right decision.

Childcare project: Costa Rica

Volunteer in a foreign country, it will change your life!
I knew I wanted the chance to volunteer abroad, but I didn't know how. I found IVHQ online and from start to finish my experience with them and Maximo Nivel was great! I felt that I was well prepared before, during, and after the trip with any information or assistance I needed. My site placement and host family could not have been better. I met the most amazing staff, volunteers and children during my childcare project that made leaving Costa Rica tough. This truly was a lifechanging experience for me. It was fun, challenging, and an exceptional learning experience. I would volunteer again given the opportunity, and highly recommend IVHQ to anyone that is interested in an international volunteer experience!

Ghana- purple program, 2017

I went to Ghana as a teaching volunteer, and left with so many experiences that I never anticipated before my trip. I was able to immerse myself in Ghanian culture and learn different perspectives and appreciate an overall different way of living. I fell in love with both the culture and the people, and I already can't wait to go back!! Overall, I had a lovely experience in Ghana and was so appreciative of the support from IVHQ as well as the other volunteers I was with.

Special needs care in Lima

Working with special needs children in Lima was an amazing experience. I got to form an unforgettable bond with the children and this experience has helped me realise my aspirations of pursuing a career in special needs care. My only disappointment was not being able to stay for longer. I'll definitely be back with IVHQ for future volunteer opportunities. Vamos Peru!

Accidentally found a home

Going to Ghana I was expecting to go volunteer for a while, come home with a few good memories, and then move on and travel somewhere else to volunteer somewhere new. I was wrong. Instead I went to Ghana and fell in love with it. Between the kindness and warmth of the locals, the amazing other volunteers I was with, and the kids who can break your heart with one little smile I was in for a month of the best kind of craziness. The locals are all more than eager to help you whenever you need anything whether it be directions or help translating (and Evans is ALWAYS helping plan fun weekend trips to beaches and waterfalls and can get you almost anything you could ever need). The volunteer house is honestly one big family, from planning trips together to eating together to just laughing and joking around with each other, the bond you make is amazing and lasts after you leave (I say as I message volunteers who live in Canada and England while I’m in the US). And the kids are nonstop showing you all the love you could ever ask for, inviting you to eat with them, writing you sweet notes showing how much they appreciate you, running from across the house to give you a huge hug as soon as you walk in the door, and showing you around and how you can help so you never have a dull moment in your day. I went to Ghana expecting it to just be another stop on my journey of life, but I found a home in Ghana that I can’t wait to go back to as soon as I can.

Best thing I have ever done in my life

When I first came to Fiji I was unsure on how things would work out. What would it be like to work with children that only speak a broken English? What would the locals be like? And the other volunteers? But then I arrived in the headquarters and was greeted by the loveliest people and the work with the kids turned out to be the most amazing thing ever. The smile the kids give you when they see you and the fun you have playing games with them, I don't think I'll ever forget a single second of it. I also did two days of construction which meant painting the school which sounds really repetitive and sometimes is, but knowing that you are giving something back to the community makes it sooo worth it! I 100% recommend this Programm to anyone who wants to experience a new place and culture, find friends for life and broaden his/her horizon a little bit more.

Frankadua teaching program

Though I was only there for a month, I had a fantastic time volunteering in Frankadua, Ghana. There were multiple types of programs running in the area, so we were never left without anything to do so long as we were willing to be flexible and help in other areas than we had planned. I went for teaching but ended up helping with medical, sports, and agriculture as well and I loved it. The programs are well organized while still giving volunteers the space to come up with their own ideas and projects. I am so glad I was able to volunteer with IVHQ!

3 months in Ecuador

Both IVHQ and the local staff in Ecuador were extremely helpful and always available for questions or concerns. Not once did I feel unsafe in Ecuador, the people are relatively friendly, and overall it was an eye opening experience to live in a completely different environment for 3 months. I would recommend that anyone going to Ecuador be somewhat competent in Spanish because it is rare to find people outside of the program who know any English. All in all, I had a fantastic time in my program and very much enjoyed exploring the beautiful country of Ecuador!

There is not much more you can do that is so mind-opening

It doesn't' t really matter in which program you are getting involved, volunteering itself changes something in the way you think; the way you think yourself, others, habits and problems.
Most of the time you feel like you receive more than you can give, but when you keep your eyes open and just do what your hands want to do, I'm sure you'll get to see how even you -as one single person-can make a little difference.
Unfortunately you can't change the world and very seldom you'll be able to solve the problems you face, but the exchange between you and another person is worth enough.
Expect nothing, be open for everything, show interest in peoples lives and don't hestitate too long once you got an idea for something.
I had a very beautiful time that taught me a lot and IVHQ played a big part in this. They always wanted their volunteers happy and were open for ideas and suggestions.
Go pack your stuff and be ready to be changed and meet beautiful faces ;)

Enriching experience in a magical country

Olá! Portugal, Portugal, Portugal! No words for this magical country...
One of the most beautiful countries in the world, especially it's vivid capital Lisbon. A small corner full of vibrant colors, energy and life that will make you want to stay there forever! (no joke) My experience with IVHQ was really enriching, not only the place was to dream for, but the people I met every step of the way! From the volunteers to the kids, to the lovely cook (Inés), from every Portuguese making me feel like I was one of them. I believe it has been one of the greatest experiences I have ever been a part of in my life. After traveling to 15 countries, Lisbon was my last destination and definitely my absolute favorite. I felt like at home somehow, from walking down to Praça do Comercio to visiting the mesmerizing roads of Sintra, eating pasteis de nata and speaking the beautiful language. I think I left a part of me there and for sure I will go back to retake that glimpse of fulfillment and happiness that Portugal treasured in my heart. My advice is to do it, don't hesitate or even think it, IVHQ is a great company that will guide you along the way, introducing you to an experience that might guide your heart and inspire your soul to do more for others out there. Become Portuguese for 2,3,4 weeks, whatever is needed, you will be surprised at who you become once you get back home! I will forever be grateful for my time in Portugal, I have memories of pure pure joy! Quantas saudades de ti Lisboa, muito obrigado!

Amazing experience!

This program is a great way to get involved with helping the Balinese community along with exploring the beautiful island of Bali. I loved our orientation week at the beginning because we got to do many activities that allowed us to learn Balinese culture. We explored the village, saw a Balinese dance show, participated in a Balinese cooking class, etc. The orientation was especially helpful because it allowed us to also learn the dos and don’ts in Bali and how to stay safe.
I first started out doing the turtle conservation program on Nusa Penida. That was absolutely incredible; we got to do a lot of hands-on work with the turtles such as feeding and cleaning them. We also participated in other activities such as beach clean ups. Being on the island was so chill and relaxing.
This program is also very flexible. Many volunteers who wish to change their placement can do so easily. I wanted to experience a variety of projects, so I did construction and renovation for my third week and kindergarten for my fourth. Participating in many of the projects was such a rewarding experience for me. There is a lot of free time to do things during the day in Ubud. The city is filled with fun things to do. The weekends are free as well, which gives us time to go on little trips and explore other cities with each other.
The coordinators for this program were amazing. They went out of their way to make sure we were safe and having a good time. They gave us good tips on fun things to do in Bali and also how to stay safe. When volunteers were sick, they were extremely caring and made them feel at home. I never once felt uncomfortable or unsafe during this entire trip. Overall, this experience was amazing and I strongly recommend it.

IVHQ Ghana medical program

I was at IVHQ Ghana medical program- purple program. I loved the organization of the program from start to finish. They made sure that all of my questions were answered and I felt secure in the program even prior to going. Every worker that I encounter was very helpful. Evans was a great program coordinator, that made sure everything was going well and smoothly while in Ghana. If there was anything that we needed like sim cards or whatever, he made it happen. The locals were very open and receptive to having volunteers around and helping. The assigned duties varied depending on the volunteers interests and skill levels, accommodating everyone's wants out of the program. We were able to work with students in areas near their schools doing wound care and malaria testing & treating and some of us were in the clinic as well helping as needed. While the accommodations were not what I was used to, I was grateful for the merging into the culture. Also, the basic "Twi" language lessons were very useful. In addition, I felt very safe in Ghana not just because the workers or security were around, but the country in general made me feel safe no matter where I went or who was with me. I would highly recommend the purple program in Ghana through IVHQ to everyone who is looking to experience a western African culture while helping where needed

Medical volunteer

I was a medical program volunteer for four weeks here at the Amber and Emerald program. As an aspiring nursing student, I have nothing but good things to say the IVHQ medical program.

During my first week here I was placed near Kasoa to work at a clinic for two weeks. Before starting, I did not expect much hands on experience because of my certifications. But upon arrival, the staff were very accommodating and open to hearing my experience and concerns. I was able to check vitals and observe many procedures and tasks which I enjoyed.

I highly recommend everyone to participate in the outreach programs. For my third week, me and a team of other medical volunteers planned a malaria outreach. We all pitched in enough funds to purchase rapid test kits and medication.

I particularly enjoyed this outreach since it allowed me to apply the knowledge I learned the first week at the clinic.
I appreciate how staff members allowed us to participate and have different roles. It allowed us to work independently, but also as a team.

Staff members such as Benedict, Evans, and Giles were all super helpful. Tihey were key players in making this outreach happen last minute. They helped us relocate to a different placement (Gold), and helped spread the word our outreach. There is always someone there to check up on you and answer your questions. Specifically, Evans was always consistent with this and never failed to resolve any issues I had.

Overall, my experience here was more than what I could have asked for. I highly recommend everyone to take part in an outreach program because as a team you all are making a small difference in the community...whether that's educating, advising, or testing.

Short but very very sweet!

I have volunteered in many countries....even a 2 year peace corps stint in Romania and I have honestly never come across a company that is as thoroughly prepares and takes care of the volunteers. Morocco was wonderful....although my first site was not ideal, IVHQ quickly put me in a site where I felt needed and valued. I had an excellent host family, the food was amazing and even though it was Ramadan the family did not make me feel bad if I decided not to observe the fasting.
The orientation was great, the airport pickup was great and one of the best parts of volunteering is always meeting the other volunteers and making new friends. IVHQ offers organized travel options for before or after your volunteering time and they are much less expensive than if you were to try to organize them yourself.
I have also volunteered with IVHQ in Africa and had a wonderful experience there as well and did a long 8 week volunteer in Kenya.....I also had a great experience with IVHQ there as well......
One last side note, I am a 58 year old woman and traveled to Morocco alone and felt completely safe alone. I have also brought my two young children volunteering with IVHQ (at the time 10 and 12 years old) and they were treated with great care and it was a wonderful experience for them!
I FULLY recommend IVHQ above any other agencies as I have had the best experience, value and ease of program with them.

My Ghana experience

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to spend three months in Ghana. These 3 months will be something that I take for a life time. IVHQ allowed me great flexibility in being able to teach. I had a range of options that I could pick from to suit my needs. Whether I wanted to work with younger or older students was no issue and I was able to pick from any subject that I felt most comfortable with. I was able to spend as much time or as little in the class as I wanted - though I opted for as much! The facilities were great.. keep in mind this is not a hotel. You have the chance to live among the community in a village and that allows you to be submerged in the culture. The staff was great as well - willing to work with you and solve any issues. One staff member in particular stood out. His name was Evans and he is a program co-coordinator. He went above anyone else I met there and was my greatest support and friend. I was very impressed!!!

Turtle Conservation in Junquillal, Costa Rica.

I volunteered for the Turtle Conservation through IVHQ/Maximo Nivel in August. I was posted to Verdiazul in Junquillal and really enjoyed the experience. The activities included patrolling the beach at night, cleaning the hatchery and reforestation so we were definitely kept busy! The turtle sightings were better than expected- whilst I was there we had two hatchings and on one of the patrols we found five nests and saw two turtles in one night. I would definitely recommend IVHQ, Maximo Nivel and Verdiazul to anyone looking to volunteer in Costa Rica as I had no problems with any of the companies.

Experiencing Madrid

IVHQ's Madrid program was amazing. You are located in a safe area with 24/7 support and receive a comprehensive orientation. The apartments are more than comfortable and are close to public transportation. I had work in the morning and free nights and weekends to explore with my phenomenal housemates. We even flew to Lisbon, Portugal one weekend. You must go to the night club, "Teatro Capital" one night if nothing else when looking for the social scene and the food in Spain is to die for. Safe travels!

Great Volunteering Experience Teaching English in China

I spent 4 weeks teaching English in China, 2 weeks in a village and 2 weeks in Xi'an. It was a fantastic experience working with the children (who were always enthusiastic and lively) and meeting other volunteers. With IVHQ you really get to experience the country at a closer level than just travelling as you are working alongside locals everyday and live in areas that are not "touristy". In fact, during my two weeks in the village I did not meet a single person who could speak English. This gives a more authentic experience, and lets you know that what you are doing is truly worthwhile. On the weekends you get plenty of free time to explore the local area and even head further afield to see some of the main attractions in China. The accommodation in Xi'an is really homely as David (the man running the China project) often visits and his parents live there, providing hospitality and company to the volunteers. Overall it was a great experience and one that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in China or teaching or just wanting to travel.

Hi Kinnar, great to hear from you! Thanks so much for taking the time to share a little your time volunteering with IVHQ in China. It's so good to see some pictures from your volunteer experience as well. Good on you for making the most of your weekends and exploring further afield in China. It is awesome to have you as an IVHQer and we look forward to welcoming you on another IVHQ program again in the future.

The Best Month of my Life

I spent one month in Costa Rica doing the sea turtle conservation project and childcare project. Both were incredible experiences that opened my eyes and allowed me to gain a better understanding of what I want to do with my future. In addition to volunteering, I met some of the most incredible people who I got to live and travel with. Weekends were free, so I was able to explore all of Costa Rica. I cannot recommend this program enough. No matter what project you do, come prepared to work hard. You will get so much out of this program if you do so.
