A great experience

Going to Nepal to volunteer, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. What I got was much more than I could have hoped for. The staff was so friendly and I loved getting to meet other volunteers from around the world. The women were so sweet and willing to learn. I would definitely recommend to a friend.

GVI Greece

This experience working with sea turtles in rural Greece changed my life. It set me on a path to pursue my passion for wildlife conservation. The experience I had taught me so much myself and what I want out of life. It was an outlet for my adventurous spirit and it provided opportunities to create lifelong relationships. I also built connections with fellow GVI volunteers and staff members that will provide opportunities in the future to learn and travel. This experience was well worth the hard work and the time away from home. It was incredible and it inspired my friends and family back home to do small things to make a difference. These projects are magnificent ways to change the world through small thing that you can do. Very fulfilling.

Once in a lifetime

I have been thinking going to South Africa for a while now and when I saw this program it really pushed me to do so. I had the most amazing time, and my only regret was I didn't go for long enough. The interaction with the magnificent animals was more than I could have dreamed for and the leaders and manager made the experience so much more enjoyable. Everyone was so knowledgeable and welcoming from the moment I arrived. Highly recommend and I hope to return very soon!

Ho Chi Minh: an unforgettable volunteering experience

The two weeks that I spent in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam provided me with amazing memories and invaluable friendships with volunteers from all over the world. At the end of my two weeks there, I left Vietnam gloomily, and promised myself to return to this beautiful country full of kind souls as many times as I can. If I’d known before that I’d find myself feeling so close to the people of this fascinating country so quickly, I’d have planned to stay for two more weeks.

Of course, the best part of it all was the volunteer work. I got up at seven o’ clock on weekdays, and had breakfast with my roommates, who were all involved in different kinds of volunteering projects. I left with my team at eight and walked to the orphanage, which was inside a beautiful Pagoda. The staff was always so friendly and welcoming that I never felt like an outsider; they treated me as one of them. As a volunteer, I needed to take the kids with special needs out for walks first. After this, I usually went upstairs, where the classrooms are, to teach English. Even though the kids were naughty at times, they were so much fun to be around, and they learnt eagerly. When it was lunchtime, I went to feed the kids with special needs with my teammates. Usually at eleven thirty, I went back to the accommodation to have lunch and rest for a while. After lunch, we went back to the orphanage, where we helped the kids walk around, played with them, painted pictures and helped do the cleaning until four thirty.

What I liked the most volunteering in the pagoda was that the staff always took us very seriously. They saw us as equals to them, and they trusted us with everything. We were allowed to enter the babies’ room or the toddlers’ room at any time. We were also given serious duties like helping disabled kids walk using their walking frames. At first, this had intimidated me a little, because I was afraid of hurting them, but after getting to know the kids I was very comfortable around them.

Our accommodation was very comfortable and nice. After a few days, it felt like home. GoEco staff was always ready to help, the organization was remarkably great, and the people at our accommodation were also very friendly and helpful. Another thing that I enjoyed very much was staying with other people from all over the world with similar world views to mine, and getting to know them. We went downtown with my roommates every night and had a chance to explore the city.

I’m very glad that I volunteered this summer. Everything was better than I could ever imagine. I’m glad that I had the chance to explore one of the most beautiful cities in the world, a chance to be immersed into its culture by helping its people. Nothing else compares to the experience of being miles away from your country, surrounded by people who do not speak your language and who are culturally very different than you, and still being able to feel at home.

Italy dolphin and marine research- GoEco

The Oceanomaredelphis Dolphin Conservation project in Ischia island Italy was the most incredible week of my life. Spent aboard the Jean Gab sailing boat, we went out to sea sailing through the Kingdom of Neptune in the Mediterranean where we tracked the clicks of dolphins and whales by using hydrophone acoustic equipment submerged in the water and watched the waves for signs of blows of water, splashes and fins. While looking for cetacean life we also collected data of all sightings of the pelagic birds- Shearwater's- as the populations of many oceanic birds are falling. I learnt to recognise the different types of Shearwater and navigation by using the different islands to work out the directions the birds were flying. On arrival I met the team of volunteers; an unbelievable group of people from Switzerland, the Netherlands, America, Turkey and Italy and am very grateful to have met so many amazing people who taught me new skills like Turkish dance, cooking and Dutch politics!
My favourite memory was seeing a large group of stripe dolphins surround the boat on our first day and getting to see so many cetaceans interacting together at once, with some even showing us individual personalities! Alongside this, the atmosphere on the boat was always peaceful but social all day as we chatted and did yoga on the front of the boat during the day then in the evenings when we were docked in the harbour we had the opportunity to go to the town square with small shops, stalls and bars, visit the beach which was only a 5 minute walk away or help cook dinner while listening to music and dancing!
As someone who had only turned 18 less than 2 weeks before going onto the boat and who had never travelled alone before this trip, I highly recommend this to anyone leaving school and unsure of what to do in their summer. Although nervous before I went, I immediately felt comfortable on board and came home a much more independent person. Thank you to everyone who made this experience so special!
