English volunteer trip to Japan
Submitted by Ishith Seth - Melbourne | May 29, 2017
I’m also quite fond of travelling and have been to various countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and North & South America over the years. I genuinely believe that travel broadens the mind and had allowed me to gain an appreciation of other cultures, societal values, religions and social dynamics.
Japan was extremely beautiful, I was able to fit right in from start, GoCambio helped signficantly with the host. I clicked right in with the family, even with the English language barrier difficulties, the host family spoke adequate amount of English for me to understand, luckily I could speak some Japanese, so the getting along was fine. The host family was very fond of sports, specially Rugby and Basketball, so we watched the Hong Kong Rugby 7s and NBA playoffs. The host family was very kind enough to show me around Kyoto, I absolutely fell in love with the city and the beauty behind.
I was able to teach English as much as possible to the host family and also improve my Japanese and learn more extensively their culture. I was only there for 10 days, I would recommend Japan to anyone who is thinking of volunteer with GoCambio.

An Irish Guest who cambioed in Zaragoza
Submitted by Lorraine Healy | January 25, 2016
I went on a cambio in Zaragoza, which I loved! I joined GoCambio as it was part of the sharing economy which I’m really interested in but a more genuine version of the previous one’s I tried. It’s more like a barter system as you both benefit and no cash is exchanged.
A few years ago I lived in Madrid and I loved the Spanish lifestyle and met some fantastic people during my time there. I saw cambioing as a way to experience that Spanish culture again and get a true immersion! I found a Spanish native in Zaragoza who was looking to improve his English and saw that we had common interests so I thought he would be a great person to partner with.
After some we agreed that the cambio would last for 5 days and we would talk primarily in English. When i travelled there i felt at ease, even though in reality he was a stranger. My first night there he brought me to an awesome Spanish bar with a group of his friends which was super fun and only the start of our great time together.
I got to see a part of Spain that was completely different and i had an off the beaten track travel experience, I felt like I was fully back in the Spanish culture, something I craved since I left there.
My first cambio was great, I met some great people who I’m still in with, they went from strangers to friends in 5 fun filled days! Allex improved his English massively which is great!
Swedish who Hosted an English Guest
Submitted by Per | January 25, 2016
I love travelling and meeting people from different countries and try to have as many different travel experiences a year, it’s my passion! Different is exactly what I thought when i first heard GoCambio and wanted to experience it.
My other passion in life is rugby and I mentor the local rugby team and thought I could incorporate both. I set up a profile as a Host, seeking a Guest with rugby skills. Then, Eureka! I stumbled across Duncan, a former England rugby player and thought he was perfect. After a few messages back and forth we agreed he would stay for three days and he would help me coach the rugby team for two hours per night.
On his first night we arrived after a long drive from the airport and I welcomed him with a traditional Swedish dinner, meatballs! After dinner we had a few drinks and discussed our days playing rugby and reminisced the sport that connected us.
Over the next couple of days we spent our time during the day exploring Ronneby, a typical Swedish town, it was so different to his hometown of London. Training went so well, sharing his skills and everything he learned from playing at national level and the team loved learning the sport through a different nation’s eyes.
Rugby bonded us but we talked so much more and learned so much each other’s cultures, I’m already planning to cambio with him in London.
American student living in Ireland, Guest in the UK
Submitted by Biru | January 25, 2016
I’m an American student currently studying in Ireland, I want to experience as much as Europe as I can while I’m here. I love travelling, meeting new people and discovering new cultures so when I heard GoCambio I knew it was right for me.
I listed my skills and thought that it would be my native English skill that would be in demand, my first offer was actually someone looking for me to share my sound engineering skills!
The Host was from Yorkshire and recently after adding a sound studio to their house and they needed someone to show them how to use it. They requested a reference and after they received it, we connected in on social media and arranged a video call. During this video call we discussed what the cambio would consist of. We agreed the best way for them to learn is to have a practical approach, something GoCambio encourages too so we decided to make a podcast or two with their talented kids.
I travelled to England for a total of five days, I immediately felt at ease which I think was helped by talking to them on the video call beforehand. We spent 4 or 5 hours in the studio per day which may sound like a lot but it was really fun and as we were creating something together I formed a good connection with them. They were such a great family and I loved staying with them. I even watched TV with them every night and felt like part o the family. They brought me out to the neighbouring cities and out for a typical English dinner and I got a great insight into the English culture.
English Guest who cambioed in Spain

When I first heard GoCambio I thought it was great and something I could benefit from. As I’m a student I didn’t think I had the budget to travel as often as I liked but immediately I knew cambiong could change that, as I could use my skills as my currency!
I created my profile in a few easy steps and went searching for my Host. Spain was my destination of choice as I had spent a few years learning Spanish when I was younger and wanted to experience the Spanish culture with a native and reignite my passion for Spanish and the culture. I found an ideal Host in Seville, she wanted me to practise English with her teenage daughter who was studying English in school.
I travelled to Seville for a week and it was usually in the evenings when we would practise English, we would hang out in a cafe, a park or a go on a little walking tour of Seville! When Maria was at school I spent my time exploring the city based on their insiders tips and I loved it, not having to rely on a guidebook was a novelty.
Every night I had dinner with the whole family which was one of the highlights, food is a huge part of a country's culture and Spanish dishes cooked by natives is a must! I’m really looking forward to my next cambio and have told so many of my uni friends this platform already.
