Krystal Watson - 2015 Program Participant
Why did you decide to apply for an international program?
I decided to to apply for an international program because I was finishing up my last year of my college education, I had waited to finish my degree later in life, and I knew this kind of experience would go a long way with potential employers. Also, I had a "now or never" attitude it, so I went for it.
Why did you choose The Intern Group?
I chose The Intern Group in London because they seemed to offer the most experience for my money; not just the activities that we did while we were there, but the entire process beforehand. I felt they were truly interested in my participation. I have always had a love for London and getting the opportunity to live and work there, while gaining valuable experience, was a dream come true.
What was your favorite part life in London?
London is such an epicenter of culture and different types of people. The sights are like no other; it was certainly my first choice.
What made your internship unique?
I met interns from other programs while completing my work assignment in London. Our intern group had so many more perks and benefits while participating, compared to other intern groups.
How did local staff support you throughout your program?
They were there thru every single step, both before arriving and during. Any question, any time, my questions were always addressed and answered in a timely manner. They never seemed like we were bothering them with our concerns or questions, which really showed me that they love and enjoy their jobs.
What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?
I wish I would have considered saving more money so that I could travel over the weekends. I just did not realize how close London is to so many different places. I always had a great time during the weekends while in London, as there is always something to do, but traveling all over the UK would have been something I would have enjoyed as well.
What was a typical day like for you as an intern in London?
Arrive at 9 a.m. Meet with the creative director and others to touch base and discuss the day's activities. Work on my assigned projects using given design software. Take breaks and lunch at my leisure. Leave at 6 p.m.
What did you enjoy doing on your free time?
Finding a new place for lunch or coffee during the week was always a favorite, and planning activities with co-workers for the weekend was so much fun.
What was your accommodation like?
I was in a houseshare with five other people. I had my own room and shared a bathroom with one other person. I liked having my own room, with TV and internet; I felt like I was not losing privacy. I also liked only having to share a bathroom with one other person. The house had a nice front area and back space as well; I never felt cramped for space and that was nice.
How has interning abroad impacted your life?
When I arrived in the UK, I added my intern position to my resume and Linkedin profile; last week I was ed for an interview in my hometown with a design firm who found my information, resume, and online portfolio. The owners are originally from London. If this amazing experience has helped land me a job, that is just even more of a reason for students, no matter where they are in their studies, to complete an international internship with a wonderful company like The Intern Group in London. I would highly recommend this for everyone!
