When You Come Out the Other Side

Going into this experience, I wasn't confident with my grammar skills at all. It had never really been my strong-suit. That being said, I realized that teaching English is not just teaching grammar, you teach people much more than that. It's really teaching different cultures and English just happens to be the medium in which it is taught. After my four weeks getting TEFL Certified, I am completely confident in my teaching-ability skills, I not only learned how to teach grammar, but I was given a foundation on how to teach grammar to myself. The road to get there was not an easy task. They drill you with comprehesnive tasks that must be done correctly; I lost some sleep (you'll live, it's fine) but I gained this whole new power that I never had before. When I came out the other side, I not only came out TEFL Certified instructor, but I also came out a more confident person all around. If you want a chance to change yours and maybe someone else's life, then I highly recommend you get to Chicago and take this course.

Comprehensive Preparation for Teaching Abroad

After completing the TEFL Certification course at ITA's Chicago location I can confidently say that I am ready to teach abroad. The course itself was comprehensive and thorough. We discussed may different teaching methodologies and techniques which we then had the opportunity to try out in a real class during the practicum. Our instructors were knowledgeable and more importantly incredibly encouraging. I had no trouble asking them any and all questions that popped into my mind. I even got some advice for my long term teaching goals!! All in all this certification program is rigorous, but goes above and beyond to prepare you for teaching abroad. I can hardly wait to get in the classroom and start teaching overseas!

completed this certification course

Enrolling and completing the Chicago TEFL certification course was extremely beneficial and productive. I will be honest, this class is quite intensive, but it is well worth it. At the end of this course I had: hours of teaching experience with real ESL students, comprehensive knowledge of the field of teaching ESL abroad, the ability to make smoothly flowing lesson plans, and gauge the proper proficiency level of new students. I can honestly say that anyone who completes this course will be well prepared for a job teaching English abroad.

Chicago TEFL certification

I took the online TEFL certification course while living in Chicago. I currently work 40+ hours each week, but the online course through ITA was very doable for me. There is a hefty amount of work for the course, but the work leaves ITA students feeling knowledgeable and prepared to immerse themselves into a new culture and become successful English instructors to students of all ages.

My instructor, Ms. Jones, was always quick to respond to emails and provided live lectures to students. If students were unable to make it to the live lecture time, they were still able to view the lecture because she posted the lectures for our class to view whenever they were able. She also provided in-depth feedback on every assignment so I knew what to tweak in order to make my assignments even better; but she also gave positive feedback so I knew what I had done well. I have saved all of my assignments onto a USB drive because the work I completed for the class will certainly come in handy in future classrooms.

Also, there is a decent amount of work to be completed each week; however, it is very possible to complete achieve success on the coursework if you prioritize the given tasks each week. Students are also provided a calendar with due dates and a syllabus prior to the start of the course.

I have taught English in Eastern Europe and Asia, but taking this course has made me feel more secure in my abilities as an educator and provided me so much insight regarding how to create a successful classroom, it's truly a terrific investment for anyone planning on teaching English. I highly recommend taking this course.

ITA was the best part preparing to travel long-term!

I spent two years- TWO YEARS- selling ALL of my belongings, paying off debt, saving money, building up airline miles, researching destinations, preparing to work on the road, and gracefully untangling myself from all of my stateside obligations so I could travel indefinitely!

Getting TEFL certified at ITA in Chicago was the BEST part preparing to travel indefinitely. I don't necessarily know if or when I'll teach English along my travels but I wanted to ensure I'd at least have the opportunity to!

My experience at ITA was fantastic! Everyone who works there has taught overseas in one capacity or another. ITA also offers lifetime job search guidance! Not knowing yet if, when or where I will want to teach, this is invaluable!

The program was intense. From the content to the time commitment, at times I felt like I was losing my mind. But it was so worth it in the end!

My classmates are what kept me sane. After the shock of the first week wore off, the eleven of us began to confide in and lean on one another. We developed a rare camaraderie I’ve only experienced a few other times in my life. They taught me just as much teaching, traveling and life as the teachers did. Soon, our class will cover the globe with graduates heading to South Korea, Spain, Germany, France, Tunisia, Argentina, Mexico, Thailand and Egypt!

The relationships I cultivated with my classmates, the teachers, and the staff were the most valuable part taking this course in person!

If you're considering taking the in person course in Chicago, check out the tips in my blog.

Life's short, think quickly

The second my favorite morning instructor, good, ol' Jessica, shot me an email to do a review of my whirlwind month in the windy city, I lunged at the opportunity, and I literally mean lunged, because I was reading the email on a bumpy bus ride home and thought for some reason the excitement of hearing from ITA was worth the face plant...which it totally is, in case you were wondering. "The people make the place." Kinda cliche, yeah? Kinda true? Definitely. Every person I came across at ITA, whether it was my killer classmates, my charming teachers, or all the staff members (that I shamelessly had a huge and totally healthy friend crush on every single one), helped catapult me further into falling in love with this decision to go abroad. The place molds you for success. Yes, it i grammatical boot camp, and the hours make you wonder what life was like prior to you entering those four weeks of linguistic and existential hell. The very same people putting you through it will make you realize you wouldn't have it any other way, and you may wonder if you're suffering from some sort of TEFL Stockholm Syndrome, and to which I say YOU ARE. Fear it and love it. As Hallmark-y as it sounds, ITA changed my life. It solidified my confidence in my ability to teach, to work hard, not long (because quality beats quantity any day), to befriend strangers in such a brief period of time, and to adapt to the attachment issues that surely follow that.

Incredible in-person TEFL certification with ITA

I have never felt so confident in an educational and teaching-related choice than after I completed my 4 week in-person TEFL certification with International TEFL Academy in Chicago. Both instructors are charming and have an intense knowledge of teaching, traveling, and interacting with people from all walks of life. I never felt like there was a question too small to ask them and always came away with an answer larger and more beneficial than I intended. The course itself is intense - you are spending 4 weeks learning and practicing what it takes some people years to do, but you are with a small group of people in exactly the same boat who can be great supporters whether you need some motivation for write your lesson plans or want to get away for an evening and just enjoy the city (or if you just need a short break, take your classmates next door for cheap pizza and pad thai). I personally retain information better when I can interact with in hands-on, which made ITA's in-person course so beneficial to me. You get to have discussions with past, current, and future EFL teachers on a daily basis and teach 4 classes of your own to students with differing levels of English skill. Without those practicum hours, I would be nowhere near as confident in my ability to jump into a classroom anywhere in the world. From the curriculum to the instructors to the administrative staff, I have nothing but praise for ITA's TEFL certification and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting an intense and rewarding learning experience.

Extremely valuable & fruitful!

My ITA TEFL certification course in Chicago was an absolutely great experience! The four weeks was comprised of valuable, informative lectures and activities (individual and collaborative) that were directly applicable to our practicum teachings and are serving me well in my teaching abroad adventure thus far! I really enjoyed both instructors' (Jessica & Julianna) deliveries and teaching personalities. They both are very experienced ESL teachers and their wisdom helped us dreamers start our journeys off on a strong note.

Life here in Buenos Aires has been great so far! I arrived at the end of February and have been teaching in-company, one-on-one English lessons. Although I teach inside business/company offices, I wouldn't necessarily call the content "Business English". Actually, my students have a strong preference and interest for conversational English and my institute's director is really supportive by providing an abundance of materials and content for me to teach to the students. I also teach English online with VIPKID, which has been a great side-hustle that grants me the opportunity to engage in more social events and hobbies around the city. It's only been 7 short weeks, but I would totally recommend both ITA's certification course and the city of Buenos Aires as a teaching destination. Life here has been so refreshing and exciting and I cannot thank ITA enough for helping me get here!

Amazing experience

The International TEFL Academy (ITA) was extremely helpful from the onset. I was beginning to explore the possibility of teaching English abroad and did not really know where to start. After a quick Google search, I found ITA and immediately requested info. They were quick to get back to me and I felt like I knew way more the process just from that first call with them. They seemed to genuinely care my goals, regardless of whether or not I decided to go through with their course.
Throughout the course, the whole staff made themselves available to all of us and were always quick, informative, and professional every detail of our experience. The teachers were amazing, with lots of experience in the field and great passion for what they were teaching. It was intensive but they were great at guiding us through it all. The practicum part of the program was very enriching as we were able to teach all levels of English, with our teachers as guides, always giving us great feedback and genuinely caring for our development as teachers.
Student affairs, in charge of helping us with job search, were always available for us and made sure we were well-informed moving abroad, whether it was information visas, companies, cultural questions, etc. They were instrumental in helping me be feel prepared for my job search and journey to another country. The great thing ITA is that you have their job guidance for life.
I feel extremely prepared to teach abroad, especially knowing that I have ITA as support wherever I go.

4 week intensive TEFL certification course

I highly recommend taking this course, but it is challenging. It’s a 4 week intensive course. So that’s Monday to Friday 9:30-5:30 (sometimes 8pm if you’re teaching) and there’s a lot of prep and work to be done outside of class. But don’t let that discourage you, Jessica and Juliana are fantastic instructors who will guide you gracefully through the course. They’re approachable, knowledgeable, and understanding. Any questions or concerns I had, they helped me right away. You learn teaching theorem, classroom management strategies, peer teaching, and also a little bit of grammar ;) along with numerous other topics related to teaching English abroad. Another benefit of the course is the 10 hours of practicum teaching experience. Before you teach, both Juliana and Jessica will go over your lesson plan to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have, as well as, consult with you after teaching to give feedback. Another advantage of the program is being able to teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced students. By the end of the course, I felt comfortable teaching at all levels. Oh and another thing, you have a lifelong advisor that will help you with your job search and your TEFL certification never expires :) Overall, I had a great experience. I learned a lot, met some great people, and secured a job teaching in Thailand less than a week after completing the course. It was one of the hardest months of my life, but also one of the most rewarding. International TEFL Academy has a stellar reputation worldwide with connections all over the globe. This is the place to be. Are you up to the challenge?

Informative, fun, and intensive

I was extremely nervous signing up for any TEFL course. I was worried how little I knew, how much work a course might entail, and ultimately if it would end up feeling worthwhile. Now that it's over, all those worries seem ridiculous. I'm thankful I took the leap and feel equipped to make the moves I need to finally go abroad (after dreaming it for years!)

Class is intense but every assignment feels purposeful and worthwhile. Jessica and Juliana are extremely talented teachers and always took the time to make sure the class was engaged and comfortable with the work. Getting a chance to teach the ESLs in both a classroom and one-on-one setting was a great experience.

I'm currently looking for a job teaching online and a job in Japan. With everything I learned, it's ended up being a way easier (and less naseauating) process than I could have imagined. Between the teachers, the students I met, and the extremely helpful staff at TEFL Academy, it feels like I've got a whole team rooting for me and willing to help where I need it.

If you're thinking taking the course at TEFL Academy, do it. Highly recommended.

A new start for your new journey

I took the on-sight course in Chicago and was blown away. This course will thoroughly prepare you to teach English abroad and sets you up for success. Although this course is intensive, you can do it! The teachers a great at making sure your workload is never to heavy. In taking this class, it gives you the practice and skills you cannot get at any other place. This course is everything I needed to feel prepared to start my new abroad journey. I now have the skills to be a successful teacher at anywhere I might go. Make the leap! You won't regret it.

High Quality, Thorough Program with Amazing Resources - Absolutely Worth Every Penny

My school experience was amazing here. It's an EXTREMELY intense four week course - I felt like I was back in the thick of graduate school. This is what a perspective student should look for though. They do not pressure you to sign up or give them money - they give you all the information and wait for you to decide when your ready. It took me almost two years between the time I first inquired attending and the time I actually did, and they never once harassed me. Once I was ready, they were extremely helpful and made sure I knew what would be expected of me in terms of work load and time requirements. I was able to student teach real classes of students of varying skill levels, as well as complete a needs analysis and private lesson for one of the English language students. This school teaches you everything, from how to teach a particular demographic to lesson plan ideas. I think the job search guidance alone makes this program light years ahead of other ones I researched. The instructors are very experienced and knowledgeable (my afternoon instructor was a grammatical genius) and support you EVERY STEP of the way. I left the corporate world after 15 years to pursue this adventure and I feel more confident than ever that the decision was the right one. The school is located in a great neighborhood in Chicago's north side so if you have the opportunity to stay nearby I would highly recommend it. I feel like I've made a new family here and I hope others will do what I did, take the plunge, and study here.

International TEFL Academy (Chicago, IL)

Going through the ITA to get certified to teach abroad was a wonderful experience. Ever since my first phone call with a pre-admissions adviser, I felt like they cared making sure this was what I wanted to do and not just wasting money. The coursework was all relative to ESL teaching and I learned a lot what goes into making a successful ESL classroom. I wouldn't change anything my experience and would do it all over again. I'm excited to now be equipped to go abroad and start teaching ESL students in Mexico.

Great experience!

I chose ITA because of the convenient location for me in Chicago and the good reviews I read online, and I'm really glad I chose them to get TEFL-certified. I loved the in-person class because of the bond my classmates and I formed, and I think it was really convenient to have the practicum available on-site. I'm very happy that I will have job search guidance for life through ITA, and may eventually move to another country to teach. It's a place with lots of positive energy and I really enjoyed my time with everyone involved.

Chicago, November 2016

Overall, I had an amazing experience at TEFL Chicago. I met some wonderful people who I know I'll be friends with for the rest of my life because we bonded so closely and shared some incredible moments together that I hold dear to my heart. The TEFL course was a huge step for me... it was the beginning of a new life. A new adventure. A new chapter. The enrollment process got me super excited. Felicia was extremely helpful, honest, passionate, and most importantly she was not pushy. The course itself was highly demanding and stressful but that's what your classmates (and roomies if you're lucky like I was) are there for. Lean on each other when you need it and don't give up... no matter how tough it gets - power through it. It's only 4 weeks! The course instructors only get an 8 out of 10 because I was a bit frustrated with one of them, as was the rest of the class. But in the end I would 110% recommend this course to anyone and everyone. It led to me to Paris, France. It landed me a full time teaching job. It provided me with a stepping stone to travel the world. And to me, this is a dream come true.
