Living like a local was my main goal
Submitted by Gabrielle Christiansen - Latresne France | June 15, 2018
I came here with the goal to see and do as much as I possibly can while helping my family with their English skills. While I still have this goal, I think it has shifted more towards doing as much as I can. I really want to immerse myself in this culture as much as I can while I’m here. Living like the locals is my main goal for this trip. (While also making them some American foods to try of course!!) My host sister took me on a walk/hike with her the other day around our village. We took the back roads and walking paths that I would have never seen without her telling me. We walked through the vineyards, past some farms, and even saw where rock was taken out of hills to use for buildings in the town. It was all so beautiful and peaceful. I truly made me feel like a local.
The Bassin d’Arcachon is absolutely beautiful! It is definitely worth a trip if you can make it there. I also recommend just exploring Bordeaux. It is the perfect city to walk around and see new things.

I learned a lot

As a camp counselor in Italy (this is a day camp) you're totally immersed in another culture, so while you're teaching English you also lean a ton from the kids. My meals are with the other counselors in the group for the month, but the majority of the day is with the kids and it's always fun each day.

Un'esperienza autentica e italiana

Having already studied abroad in Perugia, a small University town in central Italy, I was ready for my next adventure abroad to further immerse myself in Italy's unique culture, and to continue practicing the beautiful language. As a first time teacher, being in the classroom was intimidating at first, but I was surprised to see how quickly the middle school and nursery school students opened up their minds and hearts to a twenty-year old form the outskirts of New York City.
Though some were shy at first, their precautions escaped as I was able to connect to these students, creating a comfort zone when I joked with them in Italian, and pushing them to break out of that comfort zone as I challenged them to translate song lyrics, introduce themselves, and exercise their knowledge of English.
Though it was a short amount of time, it was easy to see the growth of each and every student's confidence each and every day, and by still keeping in touch with them via email, I can confidently say that their English continues to thrive. These students and their families not only welcomed me in the classrooms, but in the community, and in 2 short weeks Lido di Fermo because a place I was visiting, to a place I can call home, and thanks to GeoVisions I'm already planning my trip back.

This trip to Italy was one of the best experiences of my life! Teaching children in Italy was a learning experience filled with joy and love! I learned things I can bring back to the USA for my own classroom. Also, I made friends that will always be dear to my heart & made amazing memories traveling throughout the country.

Tutoring English to a family abroad

It was not what I expected, but on the other hand I gained more than I expected to. My advice is to have prospective tutors learn EXACTLY all the circumstances surrounding their expected programs. All in all a very positive experience.
