Study abroad was something I never thought I could do as a 1st generation, low income, Latina student. It has always been my dream to travel and thanks to AIFS Study abroad and my university, The University of Rhode Island with all their support I was able to go. AIFS Alumni ambassadors helped me budget on how to save for study abroad and my universities international office works closely with AIFS so that students like myself, who are on scholarships, can transfer over those scholarships to their school abroad with the AIFS study abroad program! My experience over all was life changing, going to different countries every weekend, to attending a Fashion show at Paris Fashion week and shopping in Barcelona. Don't get me started on going to Milan for the weekend for MOUTH WATERING CANNOLIS, GELATO and shopping! On top of experiencing the culture of Spain and Europe, I came back a different person. In more ways than I can explain. I encourage all who dream of traveling or even if you feel like it is out of your comfort zone, like I felt. I say 'GO FOR IT, you only live once". Enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity in college.
I studied in Barcelona, Spain with AIFS during my spring semester of 2018. As an international business major, and Spanish minor, I didn't hesitate when deciding on whether or not to study abroad; it was a no-brainer decision. I knew as a high school senior that I wanted to spend a semester of college studying in Barcelona, Spain, after spending my spring break visiting various parts of France and Spain. AIFS Barcelona allowed me to study at a Spanish university and sit in classrooms that were led by Spanish faculty and learn in a environment that was made up of diverse students from all around the globe. The affordable, all-inclusive price, beautiful location, weather, variety of excursions, and on-site support staff were a few more of the many reasons why I decided to study with AIFS.
I studied at UAB, where I took one upper-level elective Spanish class, along with 3 international business courses; these courses gave me a first hand look at what my major truly entails, and has excited me my future! My professors were extremely intelligent and well-rounded individuals, with many years of experience in the backgrounds that they were teaching; they are some of my favorite college professors that i've ever had as of today. AIFS has on-site support staff whom are all beyond amazing, to say the least. A big reason why my study abroad experience was the incredible one it was, was all thanks to them and their hard-work and efforts. Endless love, support, compassion and kindness were continuously being provided to me during my time abroad. Study abroad can be an emotional roller coaster at times, and having their shoulders to cry on when needed was the comfort and therapy I needed. The AIFS staff organizes many excursions that allowed me to explore not only Barcelona, but surrounding cities, other Spanish provinces, and surrounding countries as well. These were great opportunities for me to explore the world and experience new cultures with my fellow classmates. My four months in Barcelona CHANGED MY LIFE by allowing me to grow personally, academically, and professionally, which is why I believe that every college student can benefit from some sort of study abroad experience (and hopefully it's with AIFS). I am truly thankful everyday that I chose to study abroad in Barcelona, Spain with AIFS, and I wouldn't change my semester abroad for the world.
AIFS provided more than just staff, it provided a AIFS family that provided life advice from day one. They made us feel at home and more connected with our AIFS classmates through excursions and through small events like the Thanksgiving Dinner abroad. Inma, the Resident Host allowed me to learn local life by teaching us one of the official folk dances in the region called Sevillanas, and really assisted us from day one until the last day on how to adjust to living abroad. I felt like I was never truly alone because of the advice I received from Inma and the directors back home.
I was assigned a safe and secure housing location with friendly neighbors and walking distance to one of the historic buildings of the UAB campuses. I was also four blocks away from the Sagrada Família, which provided me with accessible transportation around the city through metro. AIFS also provided me with life long friendships and students I still communicate with until today. I learned how to step out of my comfort zone and try new foods like various paellas, tapas, and crema catalana. AIFS even provided a cooking class to learn how to create these foods and I was able to take those skills and apply them to my cooking in my apartment. AIFS provided all the necessary tools and appliances to live in an apartment in the city and even payed for the water bill. There was a washer in included in the apartment which made life a bit easier and a television and books were provided to create a seamless transition from back home to one's new home in Spain.
I learned how to navigate the metro system alone with to Inma's help and I became accustomed to transition three lines on metro to navigate myself over to my classes in the morning. I also got to learn how to explore different stops on my own to find a nice gluten-free bakery on the outskirts of Barcelona.
Inma always had food suggestions if one wanted to try out different foods and the professors were very helpful in providing tips for roaming around the city.
I enjoyed my classes due to the fact that each professor brought in an additional outside component to the classroom. Some professors used international case studies, others brought in experienced guest speakers to the classroom. I got to sing a Spanish song with my Spanish class and pitch my group's business proposal to a local real estate business.
Overall, AIFS opened my eyes to the possibility of starting a career in international business, adapting to foreign cultures, and transforming into my true form a confident unstoppable woman who can travel anywhere in the world independently.
Everyone needs to go abroad. It is awesome experiencing so many cultures. Professors while abroad are very helpful and care their students. I really enjoyed getting to know my professors and learning not only class content but also from their real life experiences. Traveling on the weekends was obviously my favorite part of this experience. I was able to visit a bunch of different countries. Wish I could stay longer.
This experience not only provided with me with the best four months of my life, it also challenged me and made me a better individual. If you have the chance, studying abroad is the best education one can receive.
This experience completely opens your eyes to the world around you that you never knew. It gives you insight to all the possibilites that are available out in the world. You get to step out of your comfort zone in the more influential way possible to see the world. The whole point of studying abroad isn't to study in classes its to study the culture and world around you that you never knew. Do it. Don't think twice and make the mistake just do it. It took me 2 years to convince my parents to let me and everyday was worth the effort.
By getting outside of my comfort zone as much as possible, I was able to experience parts of the world while figuring out new things myself! Staying in a home stay is completely worth it because you get to practice your Spanish and meet incredibly interesting locals!
I had a great experience abroad, AIFS made me feel like I was home away from home. I had great roommates and my apartment was in a great location. I never once felt homesick and felt like I only had a few moments of culture shock due to the great support of my roommates. I loved having 4 other roommates, I always felt safe in my apartment and found using the metro was easy and great.
